Pass the Plate

I know that tithing is kind of an edgy topic, but hey, if you don't like edgy issues, you probably wouldn't read this blog. I'd like to draw everyone's attention to the three types of tithes practiced in the Old Testament, remembering that these were for Israel as part of their taxation system. They are:

  1. A tithe of the produce of the land to support the Levites who had no inheritance in Canaan (Leviticus 27:30-33; Numbers 18:21-31).
  2. A tithe of the produce of the land to sponsor religious festivals to carry to Jerusalem. If the produce was too burdensome for a family to carry to Jerusalem, they could convert it into money (this is sometimes called the "festival tithe"). (Deuteronomy 14:22-27).
  3. A tithe of the produce of the land collected every third year for the local Levites, orphans, strangers, and widows (Deuteronomy 14:28-29; 26:12-13).

Now let's do the math. Two tithes of 10% annually = 20%, plus a 10% tithe every three years = 23.3% per year. You may be shocked right now. Many will inevitably say, "I thought the biblical tithe was only 10%." Wrong, it's 23.3%.

But this leads me to my next point: Tithing is biblical, but it's not Christian. The oft-quoted passage that people like to use to justify tithing is Malachi 3:8-10:

"Will a man rob God? Yet you rob me. But you ask, 'How do we rob you?'In tithes and offerings. You are under a curse—the whole nation of you—because you are robbing me. Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.

But the problem is, the verse is being used out of context. Check out verse 5 to see what I mean:

"So I will come near to you for judgment. I will be quick to testify against sorcerers, adulterers and perjurers, against those who defraud laborers of their wages, who oppress the widows and the fatherless, and deprive aliens of justice, but do not fear me," says the LORD Almighty.

You see, God's heart in this issue is the neglect of the widows, fatherless, and aliens. The tithe for the Israelites was the national taxation system in order to provide for the poor and for the Levites (priests), since they owned nothing. Today, the money you put in the plate goes towards pastors' salaries and building costs, and often the biblical tithe actually oppresses the poor.

Not a few poor Christians have been thrown into deeper poverty because they have felt obligated to give beyond their means. Malachi 3 is thrown into their faces, and they begin to fear a financial curse if they aren't tithing. In such cases, the gospel is no longer "good news to the poor," but it instead becomes a heavy burden.

On the other hand, modern day tithing is good news to the rich. To a high earner, 10% is nothing to drop into the plate. Tithing, therefore, appeases their consciences without impacting their lifestyles.

The bottom line is this: with the death of Jesus, all the ceremonial codes of the Jews were nailed to the cross and buried, never to be used again to condemn us. Christians didn't tithe in the New Testament (they actually gave more than 10% in many cases), any they gave from their hearts, not out of compulsion. I'll say it again: Tithing, although biblical, is not Christian. 2 Corinthians 9:7 sums it up well:

Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

Thanks for this post...this truth, as studied scripturally, and approripately, has been a freeing experience in my life. Don't get me wrong, I love to give...if you are close to me, you know that. However, becuase of one of my original church homes (and really i have seen this everywhere i have gone to some small proportion), that tithing in all aspects of the concept today is a very legalistic practice...thanks for sharing the news of the true freedom that we have in Christ...One more legalistic, bondage practice of the modern church today exposed!

My wife and I once sat through a sermon using those verses in Malachi to both chastise those in the congregation who weren't tithing, and to promise to those who would tithe that God bless them financially if they were "obediant" to God with their tithes... The pastor used the verse that talks about the floodgates of heaven opening and pooring out blessing as evidence that God would bless us our bank accounts if we only gave the church 10% of income, calling it "God's Pepsi challenge..." The thing is, this was not some health-and-wealth gospel kind of church, it was actually a church plant with connections to a very mainline Baptist conference. It opened up my eyes to how widespread and pandemic this particular false teaching is in America. It's good to see how more and more people are waking up to this abuse of scripture. It simply cannot go unchecked by those who read the bible for themselves. Good post.

Thanks Daniel, yes it really is widespread. Tiffany attended a prosperity gospel megachurch for awhile, and we both attended a small church that taught the same. It is crazy how far-reaching this teaching really is -- but of course it's necessary to pay a pastor's salary in many churches ;)

I agree. Dr. Scofield would agree that the dispensational aspect need to be remembered, when it comes to tithing versus freewill offerings.

My husband and I have faithfully tithed for years, cheerfully. God has blessed us in many ways for our obedience.

I love to give back to God. It blesses my to be able to give to needs as they arise as well...above what we normally give.

With the down economy, our concrete construction company has just enough work each week to provide for our family and the other families of the 12 people we have working for us. That is a big responsibility for my hubby and I, but God faithfully provides work for all of us because we obey him with our tithes, cheerfully!

Hey gorethoughts, great to hear that God has faithfully taken care of you as you have faithfully given your offerings to Him! My point is not to say that it is wrong to biblically tithe, as in your case it obviously is the right amount for you, but for many poor, 10% is not a reality, and for many rich 10% is too easy. My point is only that each should give what God has determined in his or her heart to give cheerfully. In your case it's 10%, and that's great! My wife and I also follow this model, but I simply wanted to make it clear to people that if they failed to tithe or "missed a week," they shouldn't be waiting for impending financial doom and curses from God. We are "free from condemnation" (Rom 8:1) and from the looming curse of the Law. Thanks for sharing your testimony of God's faithfulness!

I love this post and I love the comments on it. Thanks for posting, and thanks - everyone - for replying.

You know, Yahshua took this a whole lot further than seems 'convenient' to us, as he did with so many other aspects of the law. I'm thinking of his conversation with the wealthy young man who had kept the law and wanted to know what else he should do. Yahshua told him straight, 'Go and sell everything you have and give it to the poor'.

Everything?! Not 10%, Lord? Not 23.3%? The fact is, under the new covenant, he wants everything I have! He doesn't mean that out of the pounds I earn I should not spend even one penny on myself, it's far more radical than that. He wants my whole heart, my whole wealth, and my whole life. He does not want anything less no matter what the percentage.

We are free of condemnation in terms of the law of the old covenant. But the law of the new is the law of love, the proof of the pudding is who I live my life for, will it be for myself or for my Lord and my neighbour?

I know I fall far short. How about you? A tithe is too little for sure. But it's also too much because I might feel I'm finished with my giving when the truth is I've barely started.

Praise you, Lord, for your wisdom in this and in all things!

Great insights Chris. God certainly demands our all, 10% nor 23.3% will do. I certainly fall short of being a living sacrifice for Jesus.

I agree with you about tithing. The reason why Jesus said the pharisees that they rob widows houses is because of the taxing burdens they placed on them. The poor did not pay tithes, they received them.

Precisely steward. In fact when the poor did give, such as the lady who gave her two mites, which was all she had to live on, Jesus commended it as the greatest offering of them all. The percentage for her was 100%, irregardless of the value of mites.

I liked this post. Dead on! I call it grace giving.

Gorethoughts....you are so genuine and I appreciate your thoughts on what you and your spouse want to give. I just want to say that the Lord is faithful to both of you NOT because you tithe! That sounds like a merit/de-merit system? I'm just thankful that while I was sleeping last night the Lord allowed me to wake up this morning knowing that before I had my breakfast I would sin.
